If an injured worker is unable to return to their job of injury as a result of the injury, vocational services will be initiated. A vocational counselor will be assigned to determine if the injured worker is able to return to work and in what capacity. Options may include returning to the job of injury, working for the employer in a different position, or returning to a previous job you may have held or have appropriate skills for. In some instances, an injured worker may be entitled to benefits to retrain for a new job.

The vocational process may include several phases:

· vocational recovery

· ability to work assessment

· plan development

· Plan implementation/ retraining

When an injured worker is unable to return to gainful employment and qualifies for retraining benefits, the department will cover the injured workers retraining for up to 2 years, in order for them to obtain a certificate or degree in a new career field. As of July 1, 2024, the maximum retraining benefit is $20,602.66. The injured worker may be entitled to mileage reimbursement for attending classes on campus, and essential items like books, software, computer hardware, and ergonomic devices may be covered if required to complete their retraining.

Time-loss continues to be paid during the retraining period.

In the event an injured worker qualifies for retraining, but chooses not to participate, they may be entitled to Option 2 benefits. With Option 2, the injured worker may opt out of the approved retraining program. Under Option 2, an injured worker would be entitled to use the same $20,602.66 benefits towards a retraining program of their choosing and be entitled to 9 months worth of time-loss compensation, and any applicable PPD award is paid after the 9 months. If an injured worker uses Option 2 and is injured again in their lifetime, they will not be eligible for Option 2 again.
